Ceramides are lipid molecules that make up roughly half of the intercellular matrix in your stratum corneum — the mortar holding the brickwork of dead corneocytes together. Alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids, they form the lamellar bilayers that decide how much water your skin keeps and how much irritant gets in. When that matrix is intact, transepidermal water loss stays low and actives behave predictably. When it is depleted, everything stings.
Depletion happens for ordinary reasons: ageing skin loses ceramide content at roughly one percent a year after forty, surfactant cleansers wash lipids away, cold dry air pulls water through the gaps, and exfoliating acids and retinoids accelerate turnover faster than lipid synthesis can keep up. Conditions like eczema and rosacea are characterised by measurably reduced ceramide levels.
Topical ceramides work because they are structurally identical to what is missing. They do not signal, exfoliate, oxidise or change pH, which is why they conflict with essentially nothing in a skincare routine. That inertness is their strength — a ceramide cream is the one product that makes almost every other active more tolerable rather than less. The only real questions are what order to apply them in and how long to wait, and those answers differ by partner ingredient.
