How We Assess Ingredient Compatibility
This page explains how the Skin Care Conflict ingredient checker reaches its verdicts, what the risk score means, and where the limits of an online assessment lie.
The Verdict System
Every ingredient pairing on this site is assigned one of three verdicts:
- Safe to Combine — The combination is generally compatible for most people when products are used as directed. There is no well-established chemical conflict or disproportionate irritation risk at typical cosmetic concentrations.
- Use with Caution — The pairing can work, but the outcome depends on concentration, formula, order of application, or individual skin tolerance. We flag these so readers know to introduce them slowly and watch for irritation.
- Do Not Combine — There is strong evidence of incompatibility, such as one ingredient destabilising the other or a high likelihood of significant irritation, barrier damage, or reduced efficacy when used together.
What the Risk Score Represents
Each combination also carries a risk score from 0 to 10. This is a relative measure of interaction risk, not a clinical measurement. Lower scores indicate a milder or better-understood interaction; higher scores indicate a stronger reason to separate the ingredients or avoid combining them.
The score is used to set the visual risk meter and to help rank pairings, but the final verdict label is assigned by reviewing the score alongside qualitative factors. A score alone does not determine whether a combination is safe for your specific skin.
These Are Editorial Assessments, Not Clinical Measurements
It is important to be clear: Skin Care Conflict does not run clinical trials, laboratory assays, or patch tests. The verdicts are editorial assessments based on published formulation chemistry, dermatological literature, and cosmetic-science principles.
We read the same published sources that formulators and dermatologists use — pH-activity curves, oxidation studies, irritation profiles, and barrier-impact data — and translate that into plain-language guidance. The assessment is an interpretation of existing knowledge, not a new measurement.
Factors We Weigh
When evaluating a pairing, we consider the following factors:
- pH compatibility — Some actives need an acidic pH to penetrate or remain stable. Layering a high-pH product immediately after a low-pH one can shift the skin surface pH and reduce efficacy or increase irritation.
- Oxidation risk — Ingredients like benzoyl peroxide are strong oxidising agents and can degrade certain antioxidants, retinoids, or vitamin C derivatives when applied at the same time.
- Known irritation potential — Combining two actives that each have a high irritation profile, such as retinoids and exfoliating acids, often produces more redness and peeling than either alone.
- Formulation dependence — The same ingredient can behave very differently in a rinse-off cleanser, a low-concentration serum, or a buffered cream. We note these distinctions when they change the verdict.
Limitations
No online checker can know the exact product on your bathroom counter. Compatibility often depends on the specific formulation, the concentration of each active, how long you wait between steps, and your individual skin barrier. Two products with the same ingredient name can have very different pH levels, penetration enhancers, and supporting ingredients.
Because of this, our verdicts are designed as a first filter, not a final answer. If you have sensitive skin, a skin condition, or are using prescription actives, treat every "Safe to Combine" verdict as a prompt to patch test and monitor, and treat every "Use with Caution" verdict as a reason to introduce the combination slowly or ask a dermatologist.
When to See a Dermatologist
A compatibility checker is useful for routine decisions, but it cannot diagnose skin conditions or replace professional advice. See a dermatologist if you have persistent acne, rosacea, eczema, signs of infection, scarring, or if you are pregnant, nursing, or using prescription treatments such as tretinoin, clindamycin, or oral isotretinoin.
